Artograph Ad

March 20, 2011

THE BIOSCOPE was a British film trade journal. It’s general discursive tone is quite similar to the American journals that I usually excerpt. But among its pages are also clues to the specificity of moving image culture in England 100 years ago. For example this advertisement for the London Artograph exchange references the licensing processes, their lax enforcement, and depicts its desired audience as consisting of middle-class women and children:

THE BIOSCOPE (16 March 1911): 36.
