L’Inferno (Milano)

March 10, 2011

L’Inferno debuted in Italy on March 10, 1911. Luckily, it is one of the very few 100 year-old movies that you can find on youtube. I’ve posted one excerpt below.

According to IMDB this film premiered in the US in July of 1911. Apparently, it took a bit longer for it to come to the UK (see ad in UK exhibitors’ trade press below)

THE BIOSCOPE (31 October 1912): 320.

 *UPDATE* 03/19/2012

Today I stumbled upon this amazing picture of a New York City Theater’s advertising display for Dante’s Inferno in the Moving Picture World. Note the men standing to either side of the box office in some kind of Dante’s Inferno-related costuming. This kind of gimmickry was a common feature of  film advertising back in the day.

Moving Picture World (16 March, 1912): 987. Courtesy of the Media History Digital Library.
